Vinyl Shrinkage

When ordering sheeted or cut-to-size vinyl, a certain amount of "trim" is added to each piece. This is to adjust for the shrinkage that is inherent in all vinyl films. In addition, it is important to allow extra time between sheeting and cutting to size in order to allow the vinyl to "relax".

  • What processing factors can increase the amount of shrinkage in vinyl?
Processes such as silk screening, air drying operations, heat tunnels and UV treatment can increase the amount of vinyl shrinkage.

  • How do gauge and hand of vinyl relate to shrinkage?
Heavier and firmer vinyls tend to shrink less than thinner and softer vinyls.

  • What other factors may contribute to a vinyl's shrinkage properties?
Clear viynls and plain opaque vinyls tend to shrink less than overprinted vinyls, due to differences in the manufacturing process.
